In Moominpappa at Sea, the Moomin family experiences a great change and moves to a small island with a lighthouse, seeking a new life surrounded by the sea and nature. In the following story, Moominvalley in November, the Moomin family does not appear at all. Instead, various characters gather in Moominvalley and form a unique community while waiting for the Moomin family to return. These two stories were created during a deeply emotional period in Tove Janssons life, after the passing of her mother Signe, who had a great influence on her. The illustrations reflect themes of sea, wind, light, and shadow, expressing both warmth and quiet melancholy.
